History of Las Vegas
Robert Maheu, the longtime confidant of Howard Hughes, has died at age 91.

Maheu, a former FBI agent, served as Hughes' right-hand man and alter ego for 13 years. Maheu moved to Las Vegas from Los Angeles in 1966 when Hughes relocated to the top floor of the Desert Inn, which Hughes purchased when hotel management asked him to leave that year in time for New Year's Eve crowds.

“We weren’t gambling and we were tying up their best rooms — they were justified in trying to kick us out,” Maheu recalled in a 2004 interview with the Las Vegas Sun.

Maheu was born in Waterville, Maine, in 1918. After graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., in 1950, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During World War II he posed as a German sympathizer.

In 1947, Maheu established his own investigative company. He also worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. He later admitted: "The CIA was my first steady client, giving me 'cut-out' assignments (those jobs in which the agency could not officially be involved)." This work brought him into contact with Howard Hughes, and in the late 1950s Maheu worked for him on a freelance basis. This included intimidating would-be blackmailers and obtaining information on business rivals.

Maheu began full-time work for Howard Hughes in 1966. He moved to Las Vegas, where he ran Hughes's casinos. Maheu explained later what his role was in the operation: "When he came here, he wanted to tie up all the property on the Strip to develop it properly. He didn't want it to be honky-tonk or like Coney Island. Hughes was a catalyst in the city cleaning up its act."

After losing his job with Howard Hughes in 1970, Maheu established a new company in Las Vegas called Robert A. Maheu and Associates. In 1993 Maheu published the book, "Next to Hughes," an autobiography written with Richard Hack.

In 13 years serving with Hughes, where he held the billionaire's power of attorney and spoke on Hughes' behalf for all public purposes, Maheu saw Hughes two times.

Maheu had battled cancer and heart problems. He would have turned 92 in October.

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle,
and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.

-Buddha-

Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth.

Together with the force of great compassion
in the Three Jewels and their Words of Truth,
And through the power
of the infallible law of actions and their fruits,
May this truthful prayer be unhindered
and quickly fulfilled.

Giving to Those in Need

May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.

METTA SUTTA - The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness

This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:

Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech.
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied.
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.

Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.

Wishing: In gladness and in saftey,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born,
May all beings be at ease!

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.

Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings:
Radiating kindness over the entire world
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outwards and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.

Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.

This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

Robert Maheu passes away at age of 91

It's a sad day for long-time Las Vegans as they mourn a legend. Robert Maheu, one of the movers and shakers of this city, has died. The so-called "right hand man" of Howard Hughes passed away Monday night at Desert Springs Hospital. News 3's Marie Mortera offers more information on his life and how he helped shape the Las Vegas that we all know today.

The Coffee Pub is where you'll find the talk of the town. But Tuesday, its only somber conversations as many remember Robert Maheu. He was a kind, warm friend, recalls University Regent Thalia Dondero. "He was always gracious and said hello to you and sat down and talked to you," recalls Dondero. "And yet, he was just quiet, totally dedicated and loyal to his employer."

Maheu has often been described as Howard Hughes' alter ego, even though they mainly communicated over the phone and through memos.  Maheu began working with Hughes in 1955 and spent the next 15 years taking care of business for the eccentric billionaire. In 1970, Hughes dismissed Maheu, who then filed suit against Hughes and won a nearly $3 million settlement. Of their relationship, Maheu said in 2004, "In reality, I never met Howard Hughes. He and I had, undoubtedly, the most unbelievable relationship that's ever existed in American business."

Those close to Maheu would say the same about him. University Chancellor and KVBC owner Jim Rogers says he was Maheu's first lawyer in 1971. Over the years, that relationship grew to advisor. And today, Jim Rogers says, "He became one of my five best friends. He had charisma, he had great charm. He was very smart, but I think his most important quality was that he was absolutely honest."

Recently, Maheu revealed his health was diminishing, and told News 3 that he was using a special form of therapy to alleviate the severe spinal pain he had been experiencing. Maheu was 91 years old when he passed away, but his legacy as a great businessman and a great friend will continue to live on. He leaves behind three children, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Maheu's funeral will be held Saturday at Noon at St. Viator's Catholic Church.

To Billy and Jane and the entire Maheu family. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Anyone who was lucky enough to know your Dad Billy's know what an extraordinary man he was. But to your friends he was your Dad and he sure was so proud of you and all you accomplished. If someone was your friend , that was good enough for your Dad and Mom to be really great to them in return. He was always such a decent kind and amazing person to be around. Time spent with him as incredible and he would have all of us spell bound with history and the great events he was involved in. But never at the expense of others or of putting others down to make him look good. What class and panache. He was and is a truly great, great man.
A true Las Vegas , Nevada ,American & International Player & Giant and a sincere American Patriot.

But most important now is what a fine Dad and friend he was to you Billy. I know how much you will miss him.
He is now up in Heaven with the your Mom and the Angels.
God Bless him and your whole family.

Numerology's Life Path (8) - the Path of the Warrior
By Keith Abbott

Ever meet someone who is always setting goals for themselves? Who loves struggling and competition for its own sake; maybe even has a streak of ruthlessness in them? Chances are, they are part of the 11% percent of the population living on Life Path (8) the Path of the Warrior. These individuals have birthdays which when summed, and then reduced by Fadic addition give us a (8) result.

(For example Halle Berry, born August 14th, 1966; 8 + 14 + 1966 = 1988 = 26 = 8)

Note that your Life Path is Numerology's equivalent to your Sun Sign in Astrology; telling us what the primary factors are in shaping your Destiny.

Talents and Abilities

Warriors primary goal in life is to establish goals or obstacles for themselves, and then to achieve or overcome them by battle or struggle. They live for the thrill of the fight, the struggle for power and achievement that fills their lives. They are strong, mentally tough, and ruthless in the pursuit of their objectives. Warriors are dynamic, self-reliant people who hate depending on others where their success is at stake. Success does not come easily for Warriors; they must wrest it from life by their own efforts.

These people are ambitious, powerful, and confident; they easily intimidate others who cross their path. They were made for the business jungle, where their power and self-confidence shine. These people are excellent organizers, and they tend to immerse themselves in their chosen career or profession. Warriors take lots of time and trouble with their appearance. They tend to be natural athletes, and good at most sports they take up. Warriors tend to be either complete successes or total failures at the task they undertake; there is no middle ground for them.

Problem Areas for Warriors

Warriors tend to have problems in their domestic lives; either with affection for loved ones, or feeling out of sorts when they have to deal with people they are not competing with. Warriors must learn to balance their material desires with their spiritual desires. When they are in balance, they enjoy helping others, and life will reward their generosity. When they are out of balance, and material greed or over ambition is present, they tend to be unlucky in life.

Famous Life Path (8) Warriors

Famous people with this Life Path include: Giorgio Armani, Neil Armstrong, Lance Bass, Warren Beatty, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Bjork, Cate Blanchett, Helenna Bonham-Carter, Sandra Bullock, Naomi Campbell, Deepak Chopra, Cindy Crawford, Penelope Cruz, Matt Damon, Ted Danson, Hilary Duff, Bob Dylan, Anthony Edwards, Jane Fonda, Aretha Franklin, James Gandolfini, Andy Garcia, Richard Gere, Gene Hackman, Mariska Hargitay, Faith Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Enrique Iglesias, Don Imus, Tommy Lee Jones, Nathan Lane, David Mamet, Dylan McDermott, Sarah McLachlan, Paul Newman, Randy Quaid, Gloria Reuben, Natasha Richardson, Diane Sawyer, David Schwimmer, Martin Scorsese, Elisabeth J. Shue, Martha Stewart, Ben Stiller, Oliver Stone, Barbara Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, James VanDerBeek, Robin Williams, and Yanni.

REMEMBERING ROBERT AIME MAHEU - DEAD SPY WITH RED HOT EMBERS

19 August 2008

BY PETER EVANS

It was Robert Graves who claimed that few are wholly dead. Blow on a dead man’s embers, he said, and a live flame will start. If this is so, I fancy that after the death, at 90, of Robert Aime Maheu in Las Vegas earlier this month, his embers are feeling the draft from a great many people who’d like to ignite a small flame of truth and enlightenment under this charming, enigmatic and rascally wheeler-dealer’s life.

Some people will remember him as Howard Hughes’ point man in Las Vegas.

Others may recall that he was the man the CIA enlisted to run Las Vegas villain Johnny Rosselli and the Mafia hit team in the plot to assassinate Fidel Castro -– a scheme abandoned by the Kennedy duo after the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion.

maheu-3.jpgmaheu-2-4.jpg
Johnny Rosselli and Fidel

But if the plot had gone ahead, and anything had gone wrong, Maheu admitted he would have been ‘the fall guy, caught between protecting the government and protecting the mob, two armed camps that could crush me like a bug.’

If it was a remark that defined the very essence of being caught between a rock and a hard place, it also described Maheu’s equivocal position in almost everything in which he was involved.

I first encountered Maheu in the early 1980s, while researching my biography of Aristotle Onassis: Ari. I knew that the curiously cherubic spook, a man of charm and guile, and with a wicked sense of humor, and more connections than the internet, had been at the heart of the plot that, in 1954, had destroyed Onassis’s fabled Jiddah Agreement with Saudi Arabia.

The Agreement possessed all the ingredients that exhilarated Onassis: cunning, audacity, imagination, and considerable mischief. It called for Onassis to supply five hundred thousand tons of tanker shipping toward the establishment of the Saudi Arabian Maritime Company, or SAMCO. Headquartered in Jiddah, but exempt from Saudi taxes, the fleet would fly the national flag, its officers drawn from a Saudi maritime college to be established and funded by Onassis.

maheu-5.jpg
Robert Aime Maheu

The company would get priority rights on the shipment of Arabian oil, with a guaranteed 10 percent of the country’s annual output. The profits were potentially massive, the geopolitical implications clearly presageful. For starters, the agreement would have seriously undermined United States influence in the Middle East.

As Onassis told me later: ‘I was about to stick my finger into the American pie’ –- a pie, baked and cut up by ARAMCO, the consortium dominated by four major American companies: Mobil, Exxon, Texaco and Standard Oil – that a State Department official had once called ‘the richest material prize in history.

A former FBI man, Maheu had been in business on his own account for only a few weeks when Niarchos offered him five thousand dollars to scupper the Jiddah deal: ‘Essentially, I was asked to throw a monkey wrench into the works. I didn’t get rich overnight, but I did very well. Five thousand dollars was a lot of money for a private investigator who normally got fifty dollars a day, plus expenses,’ he would recall with a small smile of satisfaction.

Indeed, it was Maheu’s handling of that dirty tricks operation – an international conspiracy that eventually involved Richard Nixon, the CIA, the FBI, shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos (at least one of his companies, Niarchos London, Ltd, later became a CIA proprietary, fronted by former Athens station chief, Al Ulmer), and, Onassis was convinced, his old enemy, Robert Kennedy – that had made him a legend in the CIA, and the first choice to run the Agency plot to kill Castro.

maheu-6.jpg

An FBI counterintelligence agent in World War Two, Maheu quit the Bureau in 1947 to go into the dairy business.

He had remained a great admirer of J. Edgar Hoover’s, always remembering to send him a birthday greeting (‘Those of us who truly comprehend the insidious forces which you have consistently and are continuing to combat,’ read one birthday message, ‘thank the Good Lord that He has blessed you with so many years of physical and mental health. We pray that He may continue to do so’), and when the dairy company went sour two years later, the much-blessed director got him a job with the Small Defense Plants Administration in Washington.

In 1954, he launched Robert A. Maheu Associates, which he preferred to describe as a management consultancy business, although most of the associates were ex-FBI and intelligence agents.

maheu-2-7.jpg
Jeddah Islamic Seaport

From the beginning the CIA was picking up the tab for his office expenses with a five-hundred-dollar monthly retainer. Along the way, he produced a pornographic movie for the CIA, purporting to show Indonesia’s President Sukarno capering with a blonde.

What I didn’t know when I first met Maheu was that a decade after the collapse of the Jiddah Agreement, he had also been involved in another anti-Onassis plot – Prince Rainier’s nifty share-creation scheme that, in one stroke, had cut Onassis’s 52 percent domination of the company that owned Monaco to less than one third.

Nevertheless, Onassis went to his grave believing that Maheu was merely a front for Robert Kennedy, a man he detested and eventually conspired to murder, as I revealed in my second Onassis book, Nemesis.

maheu-2-8.jpgmaheu-2-9.jpg
Edgar Hoover. Robert Kennedy.

When I had lunch with Maheu in Las Vegas in 1995, he smiled and smiled and denied any part in the scam to run Onassis out of Monaco. Looking like a Vatican banker who kept an expensive mistress on the Via Sistina, he listened politely as I confronted him with the evidence to the contrary, including an eyewitness account of his meeting with a Niarchos kingpin at the Hotel Hermitage in Monaco in 1967.

‘I wasn’t involved in that business. I wasn’t in Monaco in 1967.’ My eyewitness, he said, ‘saw somebody else … people often think they see me where I am not. I guess it’s part of my mystique,’ he said as if he didn’t expect to be believed, but was too rich, and too old, to let it worry him anyone.

......................................................................................................

I met John O'Quinn briefly in 2005 while attending a Christmas Eve service at Second Baptist Church. As I was exiting the church building I was so elated that it was actually snowing on Christmas Eve (which rarely ever happens in Houston) that I turned to the closest person to my right and said, "This is just too perfect for words, snow on Christmas Eve," to which this nice looking guy to my right simply smiled with this enormous smile and said, "Yes, it is" and then he walked away by himself to his car. Then another man called out to him and said, "Hey OQ," and then I knew that I had been talking ever so briefly with John O'Quinn! Yes, it was a magical moment indeed!

John, eventhough I never had the chance to personally thank you, please know that you are a hero in my eyes and to all shareholders who have suffered lossat the hands of those who have manipulated the US stock market for years. Please know that your efforts have not been in vain, and when your company finally wins this case it will be bittersweet since you will not be here to celebrate the victory with all of us.

"The eternal God is our refuge: and underneath are the everlasting arms."

Rest in peace, my friend...
We Love You, John
